Understanding Website Hosting: Shared Hosting, VPS, or Cloud Hosting

Web Design  -  June 8, 2024

Introduction

Many of our clients at J&R Marketing ask us about website hosting, seeking clarity on the different hosting solutions available. It’s crucial to understand that hosting is just one aspect of your website’s needs, which also include updates (coding, technology, plugins, etc.), SSL certificates for security, content delivery networks (CDNs), updating plugins, website security and more. We provide a range of hosting solutions tailored to each client’s unique requirements, whether on our dedicated servers or in the cloud.

Types of Website Hosting

There are many different ways to host a website. For small to medium size businesses, we’ll be focusing on the four most popular (and recommended) types of hosting: Shared Hosting, Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting, Cloud Hosting, and Dedicated Server Hosting. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks, depending on your business’s size and website traffic.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is the most common and inexpensive hosting type. It involves sharing server resources with other websites. This type of hosting is best suited for small websites with lower traffic. Most businesses that are just getting started and have very little traffic typically start off with this hosting option.

  1. Pros: Affordable, easy to set up.
  2. Cons: Limited resources (sharing with hundreds of other websites), potential for slow performance during high traffic.

VPS Hosting

VPS hosting (Virtual Private Server) provides more resources and independence than shared hosting. It involves virtual partitions on a physical server, giving you more control over your environment.

  1. Pros: Greater flexibility, more control over server configuration.
  2. Cons: Higher cost, requires technical knowledge for management. (when handling it yourself)

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting uses a network of servers to distribute resources, offering scalability and flexibility. It’s ideal for websites with high traffic or fluctuating demand. Amazon (AWS) has become the most popular cloud hosting option over the past 10 years and many major websites are hosted via the cloud.

  1. Pros: Scalable, flexible, high availability.
  2. Cons: More complex setup, typically higher costs

Choosing the Right Hosting Solution

At J&R Marketing, we offer hosting solutions to meet various needs. For clients with websites receiving fewer than 50,000 visits per month, we typically host on our state-of-the-art dedicated servers. Larger sites with thousands to hundreds of thousands of visitors daily are usually hosted on our cloud platform. It’s worth noting that when we ‘host’ a website it is typically included in one of our maintenance & hosting contracts. This means we’re suggesting what would make the most sense, handling the setup, security, plugin updates, optimization and more.

When selecting your hosting, it’s important to keep in mind numerous factors. Below are some factors that you’ll want to consider.

  1. Website Traffic: The number of visitors to your site. Also factor in if that traffic is coming in at different times or similar times.
  2. Resource Needs: The amount of storage, bandwidth, and computing power required. Your website developer (or similar resource) is best equipped to answer this question for you.
  3. Budget: The cost of hosting and your budget constraints. Keep in mind that cheap is not always better. Additionally, the most expensive option also may not make the most sense if you do not need it.
  4. Technical Expertise: Your ability to manage and maintain the hosting environment. This is typically a major factor that goes overlooked.
